The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a lower court's decision to fine actor Ryu Si-won W7 million for beating his wife and placing a GPS tracking device on her car (US$1=W1,020).
The court said accounts given by Ryu's wife were credible and that it was clear that he had slapped her face. The court also reminded Ryu that gathering information about another person's whereabouts without their consent is illegal.
When she confronted him about the issue and asked him to remove the GPS tracker in August 2011, Ryu allegedly verbally abused and threatened her and repeatedly slapped her face.
The actor placed the tracker on her Mercedes and monitored her movements from May 2011 until February 2012. He also downloaded a location tracking app on her smartphone.
The couple are divorcing.
