Police decided not to pay out rewards to two people who tipped them off about a dead body that was later identified as ferry owner Yoo Byung-eon and about a secret compartment in a cottage in southwestern Korea where he hid.
Police in South Jeolla Province in a meeting on Thursday decided that the person who reported the discovery of the body in a remote plum orchard in the province did not think it was Yoo and that this is proved by the recording of his call to the police.
The caller simply reported a dead body and made no connection with the nationwide manhunt for Yoo, police added.
But police said they would compensate the caller for damage to his orchard during the investigation.
A large number of police churned up the orchard to collect evidence and protect the scene.
