Chey Min-jung, the daughter of disgraced SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won, has passed the entrance exam for Navy officer candidates. She will enroll on Sept. 15.
Once she finishes her training courses in December, she will be commissioned as an ensign.
The competition was intense, with about 1,200 applicants competing for 120 places. "She passed the entrance exam with remarkable distinction," a Navy spokesman said.
Chey Min-jung's mother is Roh Soh-yeong, the daughter of former President Roh Tae-woo. Chey senior has so far served a year and seven months of a four-year prison term for embezzlement.
Chey Min-jung graduated from Peking University in China. She rejected financial support from her parents after she graduated from high school.
It is rare for a woman from a conglomerate family to apply to a military school. Chey's case has given a refreshing jolt to that privileged world, where most of the scions of chaebol owners are mysteriously exempt from mandatory military service.
A Defense Ministry official said her application to military school "will set a good example of noblesse oblige."
