Statistics showed the number of students in primary to secondary school and kindergarten dropped down to the 6-million range this year. It peaked at 10 million in the 1980s but has gradually fallen since.
All of this can be attributed to the country's low birthrate. Korea has one of the lowest birthrates in the world, due largely to the high cost of getting married and raising kids. A Korean woman is estimated to have 1.19 babies in her lifetime.
Experts say the government should address the reasons behind women opting not to have children, such as the difficulties women face in finding or returning to work after giving birth and the high cost of private education.
