Pope Baptizes Father of Ferry Victim

A father of a student who died in April's ferry disaster was baptized by the pope on Sunday morning.

This is the first time in 25 years that a pope has baptized a member of the Korean laity since 12 Korean Catholic youths were baptized by Pope John Paul II in 1989 during his visit to Korea.

The new Christian name that Lee Ho-jin received was Francis, named after the pope himself.

Lee, who has been attending a Catholic Church for the last two years, began a 38-day pilgrimage across the country after he lost his youngest child in the ferry disaster. He met with the pope during the mass in Daejeon on Friday and asked the pontiff to baptize him.
