Overseas Sales Boost Kia as Domestic Market Sputters

Growing overseas sales are a bright spot for Kia Motors as the carmaker has seen sales slow at home.

Kia sold 52,309 cars in the U.S. last month, up 6.7 percent on-year -- compared to affiliate Hyundai's 1.5 percent growth. Kia's sales should continue to be strong with the release of the new Carnival minivan.

It also performed better than Hyundai in China with estimated growth of 15.6 percent and in Europe with 4.1 percent in July. Experts credit the popularity of SUVs such as the box-shaped Soul and Sportage in those markets.

Meanwhile, monthly import sales hit a record for the second month in July, with 18,112 foreign cars sold. They increased 21.1 percent on-year.

By brand, BMW was most popular with 3,363 cars sold, followed by Mercedes-Benz (3,349) and Volkswagen (3,157). The best-selling model was Volkswagen's Tiguan 2.0 TDi BlueMotion, with 906 units sold.
