Two trains collided head-on in Taebaek, Gangwon Province on Tuesday, killing one passenger and injuring 91 others.
A train from Seoul bound for Gangneung and a tourist train from Jecheon, North Chungcheong Province to Seoul collided between Taebaek Station and Mungok Station in Sangjang-dong, Taebaek in the late afternoon, according to KORAIL.
A 77-year-old woman was killed and 91 others were injured and taken to a nearby hospital. Four were seriously injured but are not in life-threatening condition, KORAIL said.
Thirty-nine passengers were aboard the Seoul-bound train and 63 on the other. Alarmed by the sound of the collision, some passengers reportedly broke windows and escaped.
After the accident, KORAIL transported passengers in the following trains to their destinations by bus.
The government sent four inspectors to the scene and set up an accident management center.
