Three airports in Korea ranked among the top five most efficient airports in Asia in a review by the Air Transport Research Society announced Friday.
Gimhae International Airport ranked first among 25 airports in Asia, followed by Jeju in second place and Gimpo in fifth. Incheon ranked sixth.
Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok came in at No. 3, followed by Haikou Meilan in China's Hainan Province. Japan's Narita ranked an unimpressive 16th, the highest ranking for a Japanese airport.
The society's review is announced every year following an evaluation by a 700-member panel of global experts in the industry. In the Airports Service Quality review by the Airports Council International announced in May this year, Incheon ranked first overall while Gimpo came in first among mid-sized airports.
Gimhae won praise for attracting routes from a large number of international budget carriers resulting in a growing number of users.
Kim Seok-ki, president of the Korea Airports Corporation, said, "The growth was attributable not only to improving services, but also to boosting profitability by procuring equipment domestically."
