Rainy Season Slow to Get Going

Monsoon rains are finally expected to start in northern parts of Gyeonggi Province and Seoul on Tuesday evening and spread to the rest of Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province on Wednesday, the Korea Meteorological Administration said Sunday.

Monsoon rains will expand to the entire peninsula except the southern resort island of Jeju on Thursday and continue until Saturday.

Yoon Ki-han at the KMA said, "The monsoon rains this week will encompass most of the nation and ease the drought in central parts."

The KMA forecast last week that torrential rains would fall in some central and southern parts on Saturday. But Seoul did not see a drop of rain on Saturday, while mild showers fell in some parts of Gyeonggi Province.

A KMA spokesman said it's "not easy to predict" torrential rains and monsoon fronts which tend to be fickle.
