Hyundai Motor Hits 9 Million in U.S. Sales

Hyundai Motor's sales in the U.S. have surpassed 9 million roughly 28 years after the automaker started sales there, it said on Sunday. At the current pace, it will likely reach the 10 million mark by the second half of next year.

Hyundai first made inroads in the U.S. with its popular compact Excel in 1986. By 1990, it had sold more than 1 million cars.

Some quality problems slowed sales for a time, and it took nine years to breach 2 million, but since then, Hyundai has gained sales momentum, surpassing 4 million in six years and then reaching 5 million and 8 million in two-year time periods.

Of Hyundai models sold so far in the U.S., the Sonata is the best-selling model at 2.22 million units, followed by the Elantra (2.20 million) and the Excel (1.15 million).

The new Sonata, which hit U.S. showrooms in the first half of this year, hit a new monthly record overseas last month, selling 25,195 units.
