Top diplomats from Korea and Japan may meet for talks next month on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Myanmar.
Diplomatic sources in Seoul said Wednesday that such a meeting could be in the cards though nothing has been decided yet.
The meeting, if scheduled, would be the first between Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida this year.
Relations between Seoul and Tokyo have chilled in recent years, stemming from Japan's territorial claims over Korea's Dokdo islets and other historical controversies.
