SUVs are gaining ever more popularity as leisure activities are getting popular here. Combined SUV sales for Korea's five automakers stood at 163,473 units for the first half of this year, up 22 percent on-year.

The best-selling model was Hyundai's Santa Fe, with 44,003 units sold. The carmaker also sold 21,768 units of its Tucson ix.

Hyundai's affiliate Kia sold 24,175 units of its Sportage R, while Ssangyong sold 13,595 units of the Korando C Sports and 9,890 units of the Korando C.

Renault Samsung's QM3 compact SUV sold 8,466 units. The QM3, which is imported from Spain, is so popular that it is sold around 3,000 units a month. In the imported SUV market, Volkswagen's Tiguan 2.0 TDi BlueMotion held on to the top spot.

In the second half, 10 new SUVs will hit the market -- many of them imported luxury models. Mercedes Benz's GLA Class and Lexus' NX300h compact hybrid SUV are among those scheduled for debut along with Kia's new Sorento.
