Amid fierce competition with the increasing surge of imported cars in Korea, Hyundai Motor recorded good sales in the first quarter of the year due to the popularity of its Genesis and Sonata sedans.
According to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association, a total of 20,380 units of the Genesis were sold in the domestic market in the first half, up 213 percent from a year ago, while the Sonata became the bestselling car with 54,785 vehicles sold, an increase of 18 percent from a year ago.
The automaker's latest Genesis, which was launched in November, has been popular in the market, steadily selling 3,000 units per month with improved design and engine performance. The Genesis sedan recently received top ratings for safety by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which also led to good sales.
Renault Samsung's newly redesigned sports utility vehicle QM5 had the second-highest increase in sales so far this year, followed by Hyundai's Maxcruz and GM Korea's Malibu and Captiva.
