Mt. Jiri, which extends over some southern provinces, has several scenic valleys that make it one of the country's best summer holiday destinations.
Among them, here are some of the top places to visit in the South Gyeongsang mountain region.
In Hamayang, South Gyeongsang Province, there is a valley called Chilseon which stretches for about 18 km from Cheongwang Peak at the top of Mt. Jiri as well as pristine forests.
Visitors may climb up 4.3 km of trail, but to go beyond to the peak, hikers must reserve a guide in advance who helps to preserve the environment along the remaining trail to the peak.
The hike is intense with a very steep path and visitors often get covered in sweat as they climb, but the scenery is well worth the effort. It's easy to cool down with a dip in nearby streams.
A valley in Daewon Temple in Sancheong, South Gyeongsang Province is also a popular destination among summer vacationers due to its picturesque scenery and pleasant atmosphere.
Along with Seoknam Temple in Ulsan and Sudeok Temple in Yesan, it is one of the nation's three major temples exclusively inhabited by female monks.
The temple sits harmoniously among pine trees and offers relaxing moments with the sounds of the stream and cool mountain air.
Jungsanlli Valley is another famous valley in Sancheong, South Gyeongsang Province.
The valley is popular among mountain climbers as it originates from Mt. Jiri’s highest peak but its shallow depth and gentle currents make it a great place for families with kids. Upstream areas are off limits due to rocks and strong currents.
