Koreans have traditionally eaten invigorating samgyetang, or traditional chicken soup with ginseng, during the hottest days of the year.
Samgyetang is still popular along with other foods that maintain health during the sweltering summer season, according to Lotte Mart, which analyzed sales during the "dog days" of summer over the past three years.
The retailer found that sales of abalone increased by 303.4 percent during these days.
Sales of ginseng which is traditionally used in herbal medicine, peaches, which are in high season during the summer, and milk vetch root, which is believed to boost vitality in those who sweat a lot in hot weather, jumped as well.
