Graphic ads featuring the harmful effects of smoking started hitting airwaves on Thursday, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
As there had previously been no ads carrying graphic images warning of the dangers of smoking, the move marks new territory for antismoking campaigners, who have previously worked to expand nonsmoking areas in public places.
"Recent studies have found such ads to be effective. In the U.S., 1.6 million smokers tried to quit after being exposed to such health-related ads," a Health Ministry official said.
