A conscript who went on the run after killing five soldiers and injuring nine others at a border outpost was captured on Monday after a botched suicide attempt.
The Army sergeant, identified only by his surname Lim, reportedly left a note complaining about being ostracized by his unit and apologizing to the families of those he killed, before turning his K-2 assault rifle on himself.
Lim shot himself between his left chest and shoulder.
A Defense Ministry official said Lim “was captured and taken to hospital after he tried to kill himself at around 2:55 p.m. while hiding out on a mountain near Goseong," Gangwon Province.
He was conscious but bleeding heavily.
After the incident on Saturday, Lim faced off with troops while being chased down to a town about 10 km away from his unit. He was surrounded by 7 a.m. on Monday as military authorities tried to capture him alive.
His father and older brother arrived at the scene and tried to convince him to surrender, but Lim refused, apparently telling them he had done something so terrible that he would face the death sentence anyway.
Military police are now investigating what led to his shooting spree.
