The 22-year-old sergeant identified by his surname Lim, who was serving at a border post in the 22nd Infantry Division in Goseong, Gangwon Province, threw a grenade and fired more than a dozen shots with a K-2 rifle at his comrades before fleeing the scene.

When the chase reached a town about 10km away from the scene on Sunday afternoon, he shot at the platoon leader who is now being treated at hospital.

He is now surrounded by troops, and authorities and his parents are persuading him to turn himself in.

The reason why Lim went on the rampage are unclear, but military authorities are investigating possible bullying, discord with colleagues, and personal problems.

Lim, who had been identified as needing special attention due to difficulties adjusting to military life, had just three months to go before his discharge.
