Nobel Prize-winning chemist Daniel Shechtman of Israel will join the faculty at Seoul National University in September of this year.
Shechtman (73) is a professor of materials science at the Technion -- Israel Institute of Technology -- and won the Nobel Prize in 2011 for his discovery of chemical structures called quasicrystals.
SNU had planned to bring Shechtman to the school early this year, but he was unable to come because he ran for the Israeli president in February.
Shechtman is among several top academics SNU has been wooing.
He ran as an independent candidate for the Israeli presidency and garnered an approval rating of more than 25 percent in various opinion polls. But his bid failed when only one out of 120 Knesset members backed him in elections on June 10.
The academic's wife, the renowned educational psychologist Tzipora Shechtman, will also lecture at SNU.
