Beat Summer Heat with Watermelons

      Watermelons are a popular summertime food but may also be good for your health.

      True to its name, watermelon is 90 percent water and very good at quenching thirst. Its fructose and glucose reduce fatigue amid the sweltering, sluggish summer weather, and its high lycopene content is praised for antioxidant and anti-aging properties.

      It may be surprising to know that the benefits don't stop with the sweet red flesh. The white pith is packed with goodies, too.

      The pith is edible and helps with hydrating and cooling. This proves especially helpful to those who feel bloated or suffer from indigestion in hot weather.

      It also makes a good face mask, especially after a day out in the sun. Simply blend the pith and mix in seaweed powder, aloe gel, or a small amount of flour or honey.

      For an easier remedy, just cut the pith into 2 mm slices and put in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes. The pieces can then be placed directly on the face.
