More Chinese tourists flush with cash are spending big on trips to Korea.
At Lotte Department Store's main Sogong-dong branch, 19 percent of all sales for the first four months of the year were made using the China UnionPay card, up 10 percentage points from last year. Purchases made by Chinese tourists jump to 15 percent if cash transactions are included.
A rising number of Chinese customers, rather than higher individual spending, was noted as the cause of the increase, as the number of Chinese customers has doubled since last year, a Lotte spokesman said.
Starting next month, Lotte plans to post more Chinese-language signs and hire more interpreters to better accommodate visitors.
