Kim Yu-na has been named the winner of the eighth Pony Chung Innovation Award in recognition of her astounding achievements. These include opening a new chapter in the nation's figure skating history and contributing to Korea's successful bid to host the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018.
Before the Olympic champion's arrival on the scene, few people would have associated Korea with the sport.
Kim retired from professional skating this year after competing for the last time at the Sochi Winter Olympics.
The award is named after Korea's first domestically produced passenger car, unveiled by Hyundai Motor in 1974. The Pony proved a worldwide success, earning the automaker's founder Chung Se-young the nickname "Pony Chung."
