Don't Cut Up Ferry, Disaster Victims' Families Urge

Five families of victims of the April 16 ferry disaster on Monday filed a petition with prosecutors seeking to leave the ferry Sewol intact in order to preserve evidence that is necessary to get to the truth behind the accident.

They agreed to search divers dismantling the cabin areas to look for the bodies of 16 passengers who are still missing, but asked that the engine compartment, ballast tanks, cargo bay and other portions of the hull are left intact.

Rescue workers already started to cut off part of the hull of the ferry last week to find the remaining bodies with the consent of their families.

Earlier, two other families of victims filed a separate petition seeking access to all the records of the search and rescue operation as well as reports compiled by prosecutors as part of their investigation of ferry operator Chonghaejin Marine.
