Police on Thursday sought an arrest warrant for the octogenarian dementia patient who is suspected of setting fire to a hospital for the elderly in Jangseong, South Jeolla Province on Wednesday, killing 29 people.
The man, identified as Kim (81), was admitted to the hospital on May 1 to treat a stroke.
CCTV footage showed Kim entering the room where the fire started around 0:16 a.m. and leaving it around four minutes later.
A doctor who treated Kim said, "He has mild cognitive disorder and dementia, but he has no problems communicating. If he is the arsonist, there's no reason he can't be punished."
Meanwhile, police also sought an arrest warrant for another elderly man for setting fire to a subway train at Dogok Station on Subway Line No. 3 in Seoul on Wednesday.
The 71-year-old splashed 11 liters of paint thinner and four bottles of butane gas around the subway car and lit it with a lighter. There were no injuries and the fire was put out quickly due to passengers' cool-headed response.
