A memoir by North Korean defector Jang Jin-sung is making headlines and hitting the bestseller lists overseas.

"Dear Leader" ranked 10th in sales in English-speaking countries except North America, according to the Sunday Times of London.

It has also been the top seller in the category of Asian politics on Amazon.com since its release on May 13.

Jang's book has featured in some 60 media outlets in 25 countries, including the Times and the Guardian of the U.K. and NBC, CNN, and USA Today of the U.S.

It is "a searing true story that takes the reader to some of the most frightening places on earth," the Times said. "This is an enormously important historical document... As a story of survival, it is an instant classic."

Since the book's publication, Jang has been on a book tour of the U.K., New Zealand, and Australia. In September, he continues to North America.

Europeans and Americans have become more curious about the "reclusive kingdom" due to frequent alarming news reports.

"I think readers are interested in a vivid description of the repressive nature of the North Korean regime and the wretched life of North Koreans," Jang said.
