Chinese FM Says Beijing Supports Korean Reunification

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday said his government hopes for improvement in inter-Korean relations and wants North and South Koreas to "achieve peaceful reunification."

Wang was speaking at an event in the Chinese Embassy in Seoul.

"China firmly supports improvement of relations between North and South Koreas and is determined to play a constructive role."

It is rare for the Chinese government to refer openly to Korean reunification since North Korea is a close ally. Wang stressed that regional peace and stability are in the long-term interest of China and the two Koreas.

Meanwhile, Wang expressed hope for a swift recovery of Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee to his eldest daughter Lee Boo-jin, who attended the event.
