Gov't to Help Ferry Victims' Families Find Jobs

Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Hyun Oh-seok pledged to help families of ferry disaster victims find jobs if that is what they need.

Hyun was speaking at the National Assembly's Strategy and Finance Committee on Monday.

"The government will allocate budgets to paying for the victims' funerals and all expenses for the treatment of survivors and their families," he said.

The ministry is going to give W2.53 million (US$1=W1,022) to each family of four to help them get back on their feet and W1.08 million in monthly living expenses. It will also provide each family with high school-age children with an additional W700,000 per child for education costs.

Several government agencies are also going to provide the families with care services.

A ministry official promised the assistance will be a long-term commitment.
