Eleven passengers on the platform were injured Monday when a transformer on train exploded at Geumjeong Station in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province on Seoul Subway Line No. 4.
The transformer on the roof of the train exploded with a loud pop when it was entering the station, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The explosion caused fragments of the electrical insulator of the transformer to fly in all directions and hit 11 passengers on the platform. Nine were taken to nearby hospitals with minor injuries, operator KORAIL said.
The accident caused no severe disruption in the subway operation, as the train left the station soon after the incident. Railway workers believe the train is superannuated and maintenance was neglected.
