The area surrounding Hongik University is Seoul's most congested neighborhood, a report shows. According to the report released Monday by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the average daily traffic speed in the area was a 12 km/h crawl.
It was 16.5 km/h in the morning but gradually slowed to 10 km/h in the afternoon. The worst congestion was attributed to huge number of visitors, both pedestrians and motorists, to the fashion and culture mecca.
In Seoul overall, the average daily traffic speed was 26.4 km/h last year. Monday mornings and Friday afternoons were the most congested with 25.6 km/h and 21.6 km/h, and Sunday mornings the least at 34.2 km/h.
On weekday mornings, traffic speed was 6 km/h slower than at weekends due to commuting vehicles.
By district, traffic speed was the slowest at 20.6 km/h in Gangbuk, and the fastest at 28.6 km/h in Yongsan.
The report was based on an analysis of 7.6 billion GPS records from over 31,000 taxis.
