Suzanne Scholte, a prominent conservative campaigner for human rights in North Korea, was nominated on Sunday as a Republican congressional candidate for Virginia's 11th district.
The Democratic stronghold is home to many Korean Americans.
Scholte will challenge Congressman Gerry Connolly in the federal general elections in November. Connolly is co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Korea.
Back in February, Scholte pledged to cooperate closely with other congressmen who are interested in North Korea if she wins, regardless of party affiliation.
Scholte has been campaigning for human rights in North Korea since 1996, when she was secretary to a congressman.
