Choo Shin-soo of the Texas Rangers was included in the race for Most Valuable Player by Sports Illustrated last week.
The magazine selected five contenders for the award for both the American and the National leagues based on the mid-season examination of players' performances.
Choo was named as a strong candidate after Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays and Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels in the American League list. Choo, who joined the Rangers on a US$130-million deal this season, is proving he is worth the big paycheck early on in the season.
His records clearly show his value this season to the club. Choo's batting average of 0.343 and on-base percentage of 0.481 are at the top of the American League, and the best in his MLB career.
The May/June edition of Baseball Digest released last week also named Choo as one of the top 10 left-handed batters currently playing in Major League Baseball, along with Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds and David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox.
