N.Korean Orphans Project Up for Banff Media Prize

The project "Hulla Baloo Choir" produced by the Chosun Ilbo has been nominated for the 2014 Rockie Award of the Banff World Media Festival in the Cross Platform Nonfiction section.

The award is one of the world's major broadcast awards along with the Emmys.

The Cross Platform Nonfiction section features online-based documentaries and interactive projects. It is the first time for a Korean project to be nominated in this section.

"Hulla Baloo Choir" tells stories of young North Korean orphans and children of defectors, focusing on how they adapt to life in South Korea.

It consists of an article about the length of a medium-length novel, five pieces of media art, 25 photos, 22 high-definition video clips, one animation, and graphic design.

The production team traveled to nine countries including China, Laos, Thailand and the U.S. for six years from 2007 to put the project together.

The winners will be announced during the Banff World Media Festival in Canada from June 8 to 11.
