A diver who took part in the search for missing victims from the ferry disaster off Jindo, South Jeolla Province died on Tuesday.
The rescue team said communication with Lee Kwang-wook blinked out after he got into the water at 6:06 a.m., and two other divers went to search for him. He was found unconscious and taken to hospital in the nearby city of Mokpo but he died at 7:36 a.m.
The cause of death is likely pneumocephalus, a condition in which air gets into the brain and blocks blood vessels.
The man, a civilian with 30 years of diving experience, voluntarily came to the scene a day earlier to replace divers who were exhausted from weeks of work.
