Mobile carriers are showing their support for the bereaved families of the victims of the ferry Sewol, which sank off the southwest coast on April 16, by waiving their phone charges for April and May.
They will also waive remaining monthly installments and cancelation fees for the victims’ mobile phones.
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning helped organize the move after meeting with the three major mobile operators -– SK Telecom, LG Uplus and KT –- it said on Thursday.
The carriers will not seek cancelation fees or leftover installments for the mobile phones under the names of the dead or missing people when the contracts are canceled.
Survivors will also be exempt from the remaining monthly installments when they change their devices because the phones were damaged or lost due to the accident.
The ministry plans to provide information about the victims and their families to the carriers so they can be spared the pain of having to prove the identities of their lost relatives.
