An increasing number of people here wear yellow ribbons hoping for the safe return of missing passengers of the ferry Sewol than sank off the southwest coast last week.

The yellow ribbon was first offered as wallpaper on the messaging app KakaoTalk by a university student club but has since spread to other aspects of everyday life, with people now for example tying a yellow ribbon or string on their backpacks.

The campaign went viral on social networking services like Twitter and Facebook as international celebrities and professional athletes also joined in to express their support for the victims.
