National Assembly Ratifies USFK Cost-Sharing Deal

The National Assembly on Wednesday ratified a cost-sharing pact for the upkeep of the U.S. Forces Korea that will be effective for the next five years.

Ratification had been delayed as opposition lawmakers called for a renegotiation with the US, saying that the division of costs disadvantages Korea.

Under the agreement, Korea will shoulder W920 billion (US$1=W1,039) this year.

Some opposition lawmakers said they only ratified the bill to avoid being accused of filibustering ahead of U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to Seoul on April 25.
