The number of registered vehicles is expected to surpass the 20-million mark in the second half of this year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Tuesday.
Some 19.6 million cars were registered as of the end of March.
The biggest reason for the increase is that automakers rolled out a wave of new models this year, which led to soaring sales.
Around 40 new models were unveiled in the first quarter of this year alone. Imported car sales also reached a record monthly high of more than 15,000 last month. Sales of imported cars rose 29 percent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period of 2013.
