Men Earn 1.5 Times More Than Women in Top Conglomerates

      Men who work for Korea's top 20 conglomerates still earn around 50 percent more than their female colleagues.

      The Chosun Ilbo analyzed annual reports compiled by the top 20 companies excluding financial institutions and found that men earned an average of W86 million last year, 1.5 times more than the average W58 million made by women there over the same period (US$1=W1,036).

      SK Networks was excluded from the analysis since it was impossible to differentiate wages by gender.

      Daewoo International had the largest wage gap with 2.1 times, followed by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (1.8 times) and S-Oil (1.8 times).

      The wage gap was smaller than the average at KT (1.2 times), Hyundai Motor (1.2 times), Kia Motors (1.3 times) and POSCO (1.4 times). Samsung Electronics paid the highest average salary for men (W112 million), and Hyundai for women (W78 million).

      Meanwhile, men worked an average of six more years in one company than women.
