The Democratic party and a group surrounding independent lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo on Wednesday launched a new alliance that will challenge the ruling Saenuri party in local elections on June 4.
Under the name New Politics Alliance for Democracy, the new party co-led by ex-DP leader Kim Han-gil and Ahn held its first convention on Wednesday and registered with the National Election Commission.
With the merger, the NPAD now has 130 seats in the 300-member National Assembly, while the ruling party retains the majority with 156.
It will hold its first official meeting on Thursday with its 18 leaders -- nine from the former DP and another nine from Ahn's group.
