Samsung heiress and Hotel Shilla president Lee Boo-jin has offered to cover the damage caused by an elderly cab driver when his vehicle careened into the hotel lobby last month, injuring four people.
The driver, identified only by his surname Hong, accidentally rammed his vehicle into the lobby on Feb. 25. It will take at least four months and cost hundreds of millions of won to have another set of revolving doors made.
The taxi drivers' union, to which Hong belongs, can only cover W50 million worth of property damage (US$1=W1,071).
Lee tasked an executive with telling Hong that she would not seek compensation and is willing to pay the hospital fees of the victims.
The executive visited Hong's one-room flat, where he lives alone while his wife is hospitalized after a stroke, and reported that Hong thanked him and wept.
