Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. won an order to build an icebreaking LNG carrier for Russia worth US$300 million, according to industry sources including TradeWinds.
Media specializing in the shipbuilding industry reported recently that Daewoo will likely win additional orders worth $4.5 billion to build 15 ships. If this happens, the company's total orders to date for icebreaking LNG carriers will amount to $4.8 billion.
"We signed a deal with Russia's state-run company Sovcomflot to build an icebreaking LNG carrier with cutting-edge technology that will make it the world's first ship capable of breaking ice as thick as two meters," the shipbuilder said on Monday.
The order is scheduled to be delivered to Sovcomflot in 2016.
