Jeon Hyo-sung of K-pop girl group Secret had always dreamed of becoming an actress, but didn't make the switch until this year, five years after the four-member band debuted in 2009.
The wheels of her career transition were greased by the current pop culture climate that is seeing more singers transition to acting in soaps and movies and vice-versa as more actors release singles or albums after establishing themselves as thespians.
"I wanted to give acting a shot for a long time, but I thought it would be better to do so after achieving something as a singer," Jeon said.
In a crime drama series airing on cable TV channel OCN, Jeon plays the departed spirit of an ebullient high-school student who roams around a local police investigation unit aiding its inquiries.
She has garnered much praise for her acting as most scenes require her to perform in a vacuum due to the other characters being unable to see or communicate with her.
Has acting changed her in anyway? "I was happy and excited about the opportunity when I started, but I was also afraid of the new challenge as I wasn’t that confident in my acting skills," she said. “But having now gone through this experience, I can feel myself growing bit by bit, and I feel a sense of achievement from all the words of encouragement.”
Jeon plans to be more aggressively pursue her acting career.
"If I get the chance to expand my acting career, I don't mind whether it's in TV soaps or films," she said. "All members of Secret will be moving forward with their individual careers this year, so I also hope to release a solo album. I’d like to do more performance-oriented music."
