Cold Spell Heralds the Start of Spring

A cold spell gripped Korea on Thursday, the beginning of spring in lunar calendar when frogs are said to come out of hibernation.

The morning low in Seoul dropped to -4 degrees Celsius. The Korea Meteorological Administration issued a cold warning for mountainous regions in Gangwon Province, issued when morning temperatures stay below -12 degrees for two or more days.

The KMA blamed the temporary expansion of a cold continental anticyclone. The daytime high in Seoul on Thursday was forecast at 5 degrees, and the morning low in Daegwallyeong and Cheorwon in Gangwon Province at -12 and -8 degrees.

Strong winds in the coastal regions will make the weather feel colder. The temperature will rise again at the weekends. / Mar. 06, 2014 12:51 KST
