Opposition Democratic Party leader Kim Han-gil and independent lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo will serve as co-leaders of a new party they are to form by merging their groups.
Making the announcement at a National Assembly briefing on Wednesday, a spokesperson said an equal number of lawmakers from each side would serve as the party's leadership, although its size has yet to be determined.
Kim and Ahn will make a final decision on how the new party will be launched as soon as Thursday.
The announcement of the merger between the DP and Ahn's group came on March 1, surprising many who believed Ahn would insist on forming a third political force to stir up the established political structure.
