Moon Dae-sung, the taekwondo Olympic gold medalist who was elected to the National Assembly in 2012, has been found guilty of plagiarizing his doctoral thesis by an ethics committee at Kookmin University.
The university committee on Thursday announced its final verdict and said the school will decide punitive measures including annulling his degree. It informed Moon of its decision Wednesday.
The university formed the ethics committee when Moon came under suspicion in March 2012 and conducted a preliminary investigation, which found that a substantial portion of Moon’s doctoral thesis was identical to another written by a scholar at Myongji University.
Moon promptly resigned from the Saenuri Party and his professorship at Donga University in Busan. But as time went by without any final decision by Kookmin University, Moon rejoined the Saenuri Party in November last year.
The findings could also get the International Olympic Committee to resume an investigation of Moon, who is a member of the Athletes' Commission.
