Kim Yu-na is a kind of living legend to the figure skaters competing at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. On Wednesday, 30 skaters performed in the short program at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi, Russia, and the person they mentioned most as their hero in profiles posted on the event's website was Kim.
Kim Hae-jin, Park So-youn, Li Zijun of China, Natalie Weinzierl of Germany and Isadora Williams of Brazil named Kim as their greatest hero -- and it is rare for active skaters to name a rival in the same competition.
American skater Michelle Kwan, who was the second most popular skater, has no Olympic gold medal but secured five world championship titles. Kim herself as well as Carolina Kostner of Italy, Ashley Wagner of the U.S. and Jenna McCorkell of Britain picked Kwan as their hero.
Kwan in turn tweeted, "Yunaaaa Breathtaking," after Kim's performance in the short program ended.
Many skaters posted pictures with Kim on social media, including Polina Edmunds of the U.S., who finished ninth overall in the women's figure skating, and fellow American Gracie Gold, who came fourth.
