Hyundai Motor on Thursday said sales in Brazil surged 25 percent on-year in January to 18,222 cars.

That boosted the Korean automaker's market share in Brazil to 6.1 percent, putting it in fourth place after Fiat, Volkswagen and GM.

Hyundai sold 9,612 compact HB20 hatchbacks manufactured at its Brazilian plant, which went into production in 2012. The model was specially developed for the Brazilian market and is capable of being powered by both gasoline and bioethanol.

The firm expects sales to rise during the World Cup in Brazil in June.
