Empty Seats Add to Sochi's Woes

Empty seats at venues have become another headache for the Russian organizers of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

About 92% of the tickets for the first day's events had been sold but the crowd at venues was roughly 81% capacity.

Tightened security control and Russians' habit of being late seemed to be blamed.

"Russians like to come to the event not prior, but as close as possible and that is why indeed we had an issue of a lot of spectators being late for the Games," Alexandra Kosterina, the organizing committee's spokeswoman, said.
