Speed skater Mo Tae-bum finished fourth in the men's 500 m at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia on Monday, coming up just short of Korea's first medal in Russia.

In the two-race event at the Adler Arena Skating Center, Mo had a combined time of 69.69 seconds -- just 0.23 seconds behind bronze-medalist Ronald Mulder of the Netherlands.

Mo's teammate Lee Kyou-hyuk competed in the same event at what ranks as his sixth Winter Games. He placed 18th after clocking 70.65 seconds.

Dutch speed skaters swept the podium. Michel Mulder and his twin brother Ronald won gold and bronze respectively with combined times of 69.31 and 69.46 seconds. Jan Smeekins settled for silver with a time of 69.32 seconds.

Mo will have a chance to redeem himself in the 1,000 m on Wednesday. He won silver in the event and gold in the 500 m at the Vancouver Games four years ago.
