Virginia's 'East Sea' Bill Clears Another Hurdle

      February 05, 2014 12:37

A Virginia House of Delegates panel on Monday passed a bill to refer to the body of water between Korea and Japan as both "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan" in future school textbooks.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has signaled he will sign the bill, which goes against federal practice of using just one geographic name.

If the bill is passed in the general assembly of the Virginia House of Delegates on Thursday, it will be signed by the governor and become effective on July 1.

Campaigning for the governor, McAuliffe promised to the sizable Korean community in Virginia to support their campaign to use both names.
